Curiosity DIDN’T Kill the Cat ;)

Wondering what this adorable cat is doing here ?

Didn’t this compel you to read further?

This is the pull of curiosity!

The impulse to seek new information, experiences and explore novel possibilities is a basic human attribute.
Think about kids for a second. They’re naturally so curious, questioning on and on to you don’t have any answers! Sir Ken Robinson questions the education system and talks about how schools kill curiosity.

As we grow out of school and into the world of offices, we’re not curious anymore. Fortunately, this curiosity doesn’t fade away but is just dormant. There is no empirical evidence to suggest that curiosity dies with age or education.

Do you have those random impulses to Google “DO cats really have 9 lives?” or watch documentaries on the Chernobyl disaster? All these actions are fueled by curiosity but these actions may not really help in creating deeper understanding of things.

Targeted curiosity leads to wisdom.

When our curiosity is triggered and fired in a direction, we think more deeply and rationally about decisions and come up with more creative solutions.

HBR in one of its Case Studies based on Curiosity cited three critical insights:

  1. Curiosity is hugely important to a company’s performance
  2. Leaders can bolster curiosity (and, in so doing, performance)
  3. Most companies stifle curiosity, believing it will increase risk and inefficiency

If employees in an organisation grow more curious, they can become:

  • Self-learning individuals (don’t all organisations want this?)
  • Employees who challenge the status quo
  • Focused on building high-performing networks, not just teams
  • More confident, willing to take risks and push the boundaries of possibilities

Let’s take a little test. Answer these questions honestly (we don’t judge 🙂 ) –

  1. When was the last time you looked at an everyday object and wondered about it?
  2. Have you look at a process at work and thought about how you can make it more efficient or fun?
  3. At home have you demonstrated curiosity about what goes on in the mind of people you live with?

Are you now curious about building curiosity? 😉
